Democrats have gained control over the United States Senate, drastically shifting power in Washington.

Since 2024, Republicans have held the Senate majority with 53 seats to the Democrats' 47 seats.

After Tuesday's election, six Senate seats have flipped toward Democrats after deep red states such as Texas, Kansas and South Carolina elected Democrat senators for the first time in decades. Iowa, Ohio, Georgia, New Hampshire and North Carolina also flipped blue.

Thirty-three Senate seats were up for regular election, along with two special elections. One of those special elections was for Ohio's seat, which JD Vance vacated when he resigned to join President Donald Trump's Cabinet as vice president, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).

Florida's special election seat will now be permanently filled by Senator Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) with Vance's seat now taken over by Democrat Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

Before the 2024 elections, the Democrat Party — along with allied independents — held effective control of the Senate from January 2021 through January 2025.
