Hannah Pingree Defeats Bobby Charles, Keeping Maine’s Governorship in Democratic Hands

Democrat Hannah Pingree has been elected as the next governor of Maine, defeating Republican Bobby Charles handily in what has been developing into a wave election.

The Blaine House remains in Democratic hands as Augusta enjoyed a very good night for the party, solidifying the capital city and much of the state as a progressive stronghold.

Pingree is a former speaker of the Maine House of Representatives and part of a political legacy, with her mother, Chellie Pingree, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Though Bobby Charles tried to maintain some separation between himself and the unpopular Trump administration, he was unsuccessful, with Maine Democratic voters going to the polls in great numbers.

Governor-elect Pingree will be sworn in on Wednesday, January 6, 2027, succeeding Gov. Janet Mills.
