Democrat Amy Klobuchar has won Minnesota's gubernatorial race, taking the seat of Governor Tim Walz.

Klobuchar (D-Minn.) secured Minnesota's governor's seat on Tuesday, receiving 1,552,051 votes or 55%, while Demuth (R-Minn.) garnered 1,185,898 votes or 42%, according to the Associated Press. The race was called when 97% of the total votes were counted.

Klobuchar, the senior U.S. Senator for Minnesota, has served in office since 2007 and previously sought the 2020 Democrat presidential nomination. The senior senator's gubernatorial campaign centered on lowering costs for families, strengthening public safety, expanding the rural economy and increasing state government accountability.

Demuth was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2018. She has served as GOP leader in the chamber since the start of 2023 and as speaker for the past year and a half. Demuth secured the nomination by defeating Trump-endorsed "MyPillow" founder Mike Lindell and healthcare executive Kendall Qualls in the primary election.

Klobuchar is succeeding Governor Walz (D-Minn.), who ultimately dropped his bid for a third term after facing widespread criticism over multi-million-dollar welfare and program fraud investigations. Federal prosecutors uncovered a $250 million scheme within state-administered programs – the largest COVID-19 relief fraud case in the nation – making government accountability, fiscal integrity and fraud prevention central issues in the race.
