Democrat Hannah Pingree has won the governor's race in Maine, defeating her opponent GOP opponent Robert Charles.
Pingree prevailed over Charles in the Maine's governor race, earning 54%, of the votes, while the Republican secured 37% of the votes, according to the Associated Press on Tuesday. The race was called when 62% of the total votes were counted.
Born in Belfast and raised on North Haven, Pingree made history in 2008 when she was elected Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives at age 32. She became the youngest woman in the nation — and only the second woman in Maine history — to serve in the role.
Beyond her legislative work, Pingree serves as Director of the Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future, chairs her local school board and runs a small business. During her gubernatorial campaign, she focused heavily on expanding healthcare access and increasing affordable housing across Maine.
Raised in Wayne, Maine, Charles earned his law degree from Columbia Law School before returning home to serve his state. From 2003 to 2005, he served as Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. According to his campaign website, Charles launched his gubernatorial bid with a focus on safer communities, stronger schools, tax relief and government accountability.
— will be replacing Governor Janet Mills (D-Maine) who has been in office since 2019. She is ineligible to run for reelection as governor she has already served two consecutive four year terms.
