Pastor and author Adam Hamilton has won the United States Senate seat in Kansas, defeating incumbent Senator Roger "Doc" Marshall and marking the first

Democrat to win the Sunflower state's seat in 94 years.

After Tuesday's midterm election, Hamilton (D-Kan.) won 51% of the vote, while Marshall (R-Kan.) garnered 45%, the Associated Press called with 98% of total votes counted.

Marshall was endorsed by President Donald Trump ahead of this year's primary elections.

The senator previously practiced medicine for more than 25 years in Great Bend and delivered more than 5,000 babies as an OB/GYN, which he said gave him "a deep appreciation and passion for the sanctity of life and an intimate understanding of the healthcare system."

Given his background, Marshall is a member of the GOP Doctors Caucus and the Pro-Life Caucus and he proudly supports pro-life legislation in Congress. For example, last year, he helped to introduce the More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed (MOMS) Act to give mothers access to critical resources during the prenatal, postpartum and early childhood development stages and establish a website, Pregnancy.gov, for those resources to be found.

Marshall serves on the Committee on Finance and the Committee on the Budget, as well as the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. His Senate website describes him as "a congressional leader on health care and agriculture policies, a national voice on pro-life issues, and a champion of the 2nd amendment."

Hamilton describes himself as an "independent-minded Democrat." On the economy, he opposes the Trump administration's tariffs, but still supports banning large investment firms from buying single-family homes, which the Trump administration has helped to accomplish.

He also supports reversing federal Medicaid cuts and restoring enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, premium subsidies.

Even as a pastor, Hamilton supports abortion — labeling it "a woman's right to choose" — and codifying access to contraception into U.S. law. The Democrat states that he supports "safe and legal access to abortion" and voted against Kansas's 2022 "Value Them Both" constitutional amendment, which would have removed abortion protections from the state constitution.

Methodists in the United States skew more moderate to liberal on average compared to non-denominational Protestants, who lean predominantly conservative.
