Meet the country's newest hero: Banana Girl

Sometimes a food-related costume becomes nothing more than a meme.

But sometimes it becomes something more — a story, a legend, a fable that inspires us to greatness, that dares us to dream big and aim for the stars.

More from the Washington Post:

Stephanie Oropeza was recently invited to a Halloween party on short notice, so she slipped on the only costume in her closet: An oversize banana her fiancé had bought a few years ago.

After the party, as Oropeza and her fiancé drove home around 4 a.m., they noticed a car swerving behind them into the opposite lane. They thought the driver was trying to pass them, but a few seconds later, the car sped off the road and crashed into the front patio of an Orlando bar.

'Stop the car right now,' Oropeza recalled telling her fiancé, Dragan Nesic. 'We need to go check on him.'

Many of us, bedecked in a nanner costume at 4 a.m. in the middle of Orlando, would probably opt to keep driving in such a scenario. At the very least we might say, "Honey, can we at least drive home first so I can change into my sweats?"

Not Stephanie Oropeza. She was on the job. She was not going to be stopped.

And so, on the dark streets of Central Florida, Banana-Girl was born:

Not all heroes wear capes (some of them wear peels).

Oropeza "called 911 and rushed to the scene, where the car had crashed into fencing, chairs, a cement planter and tables." A nurse-in-training, she was prepared to give CPR to the crash victim, though thankfully he "stepped out of the car and appeared uninjured."

Crisis averted, thanks to Banana-Girl.

Evidently the driver was only cited for "reckless driving."

Oropeza, meanwhile, has become a local celebrity, including having a local cocktail named after her. She has also been depicted on stickers made by a local artist.

The consummate superhero, Oropeza is modest to the end:

'I'm normally not out at 4 a.m. saving people,' she said. 'But I guess I got caught at the right time and the right place.

Orlando's a safer, more potassium-y place with Banana Girl on the streets!
