London jury finds Russell Brand guilty of rape, sexual assault

Big news out of Britain in the trial of the Hollywood actor turned political commentator Russell Brand.

A jury of his peers in London found the actor guilty of rape and sexual assault.

The Brand rebrand may have just come to an end.

Here's the Hollywood Reporter:

After a four-week, highly publicized trial at Southwark Crown Court, the jury delivered the verdicts on Thursday, finding the disgraced comedian, presenter and actor — best known for film roles in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and St. Trinian's — guilty on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was found not guilty on two other rape charges and not guilty of attempted indecent assault.

Justice Bennathan had required a unanimous verdict from the jury on all seven charges. Brand, who had vehemently denied the claims, will now be remanded in custody and sentenced on Monday. He was denied bail.

You can read the details of the rapes and assault cases Brand was convicted of in the Reporter's story; we'll keep it more PG here.

In the rape case, the assault took place in 2009 when a woman who met with Brand to have sex was, according to her accusations, forced to go further than she planned. The assaults Brand was convicted of took place in the 2000s as well.

In the last few years, Brand was baptized and has been outspoken about his faith.

He released a book titled How to Become a Christian in Seven Days earlier this year and has been open about being a recovering "sex addict" from his earlier days as a celebrity, but has continued to deny any rape or assault allegations.

Brand's sentencing will be handed down on Monday. He's being held without bail.
