An octogenarian lawmaker infamous for screaming at journalists and sending a rude letter to a child is on the verge of losing her seat after more than 21 years.
Incumbent congresswoman for North Carolina's fifth district Virginia Foxx, 83, is set to lose her seat to Democrat upstart Chuck Hubbard.
Hubbard has so far taken home 139,034 votes, or 48.7 percent, while Foxx managed to get 138,935, or 48.66 percent, according to NBC.
At the time of publication, Foxx is just 99 votes behind, with more than 95% of votes in the district having been counted.
While a majority of counties in North Carolina's fifth congressional district were pro-Foxx, Hubbard comfortably managed to win Guilford county, the largest by a long way.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, she brusquely said she had not yet conceded to her opponent.
'The race hasn't been decided', she pointedly said, adding that she almost lost one of her first elections to a school board years ago before the results were reversed.
'On the night of the election, they told me I had lost. Then the next morning they called me back and said, "We misapplied 100 votes to one of the other people running. They really should have gone to you, so you won".'

Republican lawmakers booed, jeered and were overall dismissive of a reporter asking the latest Speaker nominee Mike Johnson about his vote to overturn the 2020 election results. Rep. Virginia Foxx (lower right) shouted: 'Shut up, shut up!'

The potential loss comes after 21 years in Congress marked by significant controversy during the Trump era. Earlier this year, she wrote a 'disrespectful' and 'hostile' letter to a 10-year-old boy who asked her about the benefits of electric vehicles.
Foxx accused the child, Christian Mango, of being 'indoctrinated' after he sent her a letter asking her to consider giving tax credits to electric vehicles.
His mom, Emily Mango, 42, shared the 'horrific letter' from Foxx in response to her son Christian's school assignment.
Christian, a pupil at Canterbury School in Greensboro, sent the representative a persuasive essay. 'He researched, cited facts, and made good arguments in his essay - an essay that had nothing to do with politics. He was proud of his essay,' Mango said.
Christian mailed the essay to Foxx in a school envelope that clearly indicated the letter was written by a child in April, according to Mango.
Several weeks later, his mom said Foxx wrote a response to Christian 'in a disrespectful, hostile and unkind tone,' accusing him of being 'indoctrinated' by his teachers at the Episcopal day school.
Foxx thanked Christian for 'taking the time to share your thoughts,' then went on to attack his proposal.
Mango slammed the elderly woman for writing such a harsh rebuke to a child and criticized her for attacking her son's teachers.

Foxx has long courted controversy since she began working in the House 21 years ago

The Republican voted against relief measures following Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy

Foxx also voted against the release of the Jeffrey Epstein Files
'Reprehensible response. You crossed a line when you attacked a child and attacked teachers,' Mango said.
In 2023, she was filmed jeering and telling journalists to 'shut up' in response to a question about the 2020 election.
During a huddle, ABC reporter Rachel Scott began asking Speaker Mike Johnson about his 'effort to overturn the 2020 election results.'
Upon hearing this question, the large crowd of Republicans began groaning.
But Foxx was heard shouting: 'Shut up, shut up.'
After joining the House of Representatives in 2005, she almost immediately courted controversy that year when she was one of just 11 congresspeople to vote against the $51 billion aid package for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
She also twice voted against aid measures to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy in 2013.
However, when her own district was hit by Hurricane Helene in 2024, she twice voted yes on relief measures.
In 2021, Foxx was fined $5,000 for evading metal detectors put in place following the January 6 attack on the Capitol Building.
According to two Capitol Police officers, she threw her bag under a table next to the metal detector before she 'ran' through it, setting it off.
Foxx then proceeded to the floor despite being told by officers to stop.
Upon leaving the building, she collected her bag and went through the required security procedure, allegedly telling the officers: 'Good thing no one stopped me.'
In 2025, she voted against multiple proposals to release the Jeffrey Epstein Files.
Foxx said at the time: 'I think most of us believe what's appropriate will be released when it is time for the president to release it.'
