Television personality Martha Setwart formally apologized in a statement on social media following an intense backlash for dressing as a homeless person on Halloween.
The homemaking icon posted a photo of herself in the costume, which included torn clothing and a stocking cap with her holding a handwritten cardboard sign that read, "I am hungry. Help me!!"

"My earlier statement didn't go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry," Stewart wrote.
The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul had previously released a statement to Page Six stating that she was "distressed" by the backlash. Her costume, she said, was "intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness."
