Man arrested after allegedly threatening people with a samurai sword at popular Sydney beach

A man has been arrested after allegedly threatening beachgoers with a samurai sword in Sydney's east over the weekend.

Police were called to Bilga Crescent, Malabar, about 2.25pm on Sunday following reports of a man acting suspiciously in the area.

Officers were told the man, who was allegedly armed with a samurai sword, had been seen walking on rocks along the coastline before threatening a group of people at Little Bay Beach.

He then allegedly left the scene before police arrived.

Police, assisted by officers from the Armed Response Command, Polair and Highway Patrol Command, began searching the area.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on Mayo Street, Little Bay, a short time later.

Police seized a number of edged weapons allegedly in the man's possession as well as a samurai sword hidden in bushes nearby.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

The man was taken to Maroubra Police Station and charged with one count of being armed with intent to commit indictable offence and three counts of having custody of an offensive implement in a public place.

He was refused police bail to appear before Bail Division Court on Monday.
