Maine senator's office is splattered with blood-like paint as disgruntled Democrats switch their votes at the last minute... and the first race is called: Midterms live

Maine senator's office is splattered with blood-like paint as disgruntled Democrats switch their votes at the last minute... and the first race is called: Midterms live

As Americans rushed to the polls on Tuesday to cast their midterm ballots, there was chaos in several key battleground states.

In Maine, incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins' office was vandalized with fake blood spelling out 'blood on her hands' in a last minute protest.

Collins is running against Democrat Troy Jackson in one of the races that will decide who takes control of congress.

In Westchester County, New York, voters have been told to stay in line after a glitch in machines saw some ballots rejected, with officials blaming the 'thickness' of ballot paper for causing widespread malfunctions and plunging the race into uncertainty.

Meanwhile in the hot races of Michigan and Alaska, disgruntled Democrats shocked reporters by announcing last minute vote switches.

In Alaska, lifelong blue-voters said they were going red after the 'decoy' Dan Sullivan scandal, which saw a 'spoiler' candidate added to the ballot - allegedly by Democrat Mary Peltola.

In Michigan, Jewish Democrats are voting for Republican Mike Rogers to keep Democrat candidate Abdul El-Sayed at bay.

In Florida, extreme weather has forced some polling stations to close and move, and election officials in North Carolina are already predicting delays in their results.

With Republicans bracing for a 'blue tsunami' in the midterms, voting opened across the US on Tuesday morning as crucial Senate, House, and governor seats are up for grabs – and polling shows historical GOP strongholds have turned into political battlegrounds.

In the Senate, Democrats must flip four Republican-held seats to gain control. In the House, Democrats need to pick up just three seats.

The first polls close at 6pm ET and the last polls wrap up at 1am ET. Then the nation will wait as ballots are counted across the country to find out whether Republicans or Democrats will take power.

Doug Burgum defends Trump reflecting pool event as the 'perfect spot' for final midterm speech

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum defended President Donald Trump's decision to focus his final campaign efforts at the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.

'It's a perfect spot to say to America, just like closing the border was a choice, just like cutting taxes was a choice, just like cutting regulation was a choice, Americans do not have to accept decline and squalor in our major cities,' Burgam said to reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

Burgum noted that under President Trump, fountains and parks were rebuilt, statues were refurbished, and 163 homeless encampments in the Washington DC's national parks were removed.

'Nobody wrote a story on that,' he said.

'All of that started with President Trump, because he said if we're going to have the greatest county in the world, why wouldn't we have the greatest capitol in the world?'

Westchester emergency ballots to be given police escort to counting sites following glitch

Emergency ballots currently being cast in Westchester County, New York, after a glitch in voting machines will be escorted by police to a counting facility tonight, officials said.

Voting machines in the county have been unable to scan ballots, with officials blaming the 'thickness' of ballot paper for causing widespread malfunctions and plunging the race into uncertainty.

Republican Representative Mike Lawler told reporters that the emergency ballots cast will be transported via a police escort to be counted later this evening.

He said: 'Those ballots will not be opened at the polling site, they will be opened at the Board of Elections, where attorneys from both campaigns will be, where both parties will have representation, so that there be no question, that there be no conspiracy theory, and that every vote is counted.

'What I want to assure everybody is that every vote will be counted.'

Democrat Haley Stevens ridiculed for bizarre new look at the polls after betraying Abdul El-Sayed: 'It's concerning'

Outgoing Michigan Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens was spotted sporting an unusual new look as she went to cast an election-day ballot alongside her mother.

Wearing a large straw hat that many online observers compared to one donned by video game character Carmen Sandiego, Stevens turned out to support Republican Mike Rogers in the state's hotly contested race for the Senate.

She was declared a 'traitor' for abandoning the state's Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed for Senate with a shocking eleventh-hour endorsement of Rogers on Sunday.

The View host Sara Haines trembles with rage as she defends renegade turncoat Democrat Haley Stevens

The View co-host Sara Haines has came out and defended Democrat Haley Stevens over her shock endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers.

The Michigan politician said Sunday she had decided to vote for Representative Mike Rogers over Abdul El-Sayed in the midterms because her one-time Democratic rival 'chose to close his campaign by saying I wasn't welcome'.

During a discussion of the defection on The View, Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro both said that Stevens jumped ship for all the wrong reasons.

But Haines, clearly raging over the chat, said: 'I disagree. And I actually think that, although there's a lot of Islamophobia here that are muddying the waters, there are deep concerns about his beliefs.

'Campaigning with Hasan Piker, you could not put enough room between me and that man. And we went after the Republicans for going around with Nick Fuentes, also problematic.

'We have got to know when we denounce someone. And if crossing party lines can be an act of conscience for Liz Cheney, I don't know why the automatic response was that this was betrayal somehow.'

Alaska reports huge early voting numbers as 'Decoy Dan' scandal upends key Senate race

Alaska election officials said the state has received almost 100,000 early ballots amid huge voter turnout in the midterms.

The number in Alaska includes early votes, mail ballots, online-delivery ballots, and in-person absentee ballots, with election day totals likely to break Alaska voting records.

The total on Tuesday is more than Alaska has received in the entirety of other midterm elections dating back two decades, except in 2022 when it reported 101,000 early ballots, reports CNN.

The huge early turnout numbers come as Democratic candidate Mary Peltola has denied allegations her campaign recruited a man with the same name as her GOP rival Dan Sullivan to confuse voters.

Republican Tony Ada has been projected to become the new Governor of Guam in the first results of the 2026 midterm elections.

'Guam, which has always been considered strongly Democrat, just had an early call for a REPUBLICAN Victory in the top spot, Governor — Congratulations to Tony Ada!' Trump wrote on Truth Social.

'Also, the Republicans have the Majority in the State Senate.'

With all precincts reported, Ada won with 51.5 percent of the vote, to his Democrat challenger Theresa Terlaje's 48.1 percent.

However, Democrats did win Guam's non-voting delegate to the US House race, with Alicia Limtiaco defeating James Moylan.

Ohio primary school polling place evacuated after receiving two bomb threats

Two bomb threats within 10 minutes led a primary school in Ohio being used as a polling place to be evacuated on Tuesday.

The threats were made to Beverley Elementary in Toledo, Ohio, with the first threat made at 10:30am local time, the Toledo Police Department said.

At 10:39am, a second bomb threat was reported at a nearby location where a teacher's workday training was taking place.

The threats led the polling place to be evacuated and the Northwest Ohio Bomb Squad deployed a K-9 unit to sweep the area. Officials said no explosive devices were found, and it is unclear if the two bomb threats were connected.

In the nearby town of Bowling Green, two schools were also evacuated after receiving 'threatening calls' on Tuesday morning, reports NBC News.
