Pregnant Woman Killed, Six Wounded in Targeted Spirit Halloween Store Shooting

A Halloween shopping trip turned into a nightmare in Fairfield, California, after gunfire erupted inside a crowded Spirit Halloween store, killing a 31-year-old woman and wounding six other people.

The woman was identified as Constance Hages. Her family said she was pregnant and had gone to the store with her husband when the shooting began.

The Associated Press reported that Fairfield police were called to the Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center at about 8:30 p.m. Friday. Officers found seven people wounded by gunfire, and Hages died at the scene despite efforts to save her.

Police described the shooting as a targeted incident involving one suspect, rather than a random attack. Investigators had not announced an arrest in the latest public update, and they had not released a motive or identified the intended target.

Three of the surviving victims were initially listed in critical condition. By Saturday, police said one remained in critical but stable condition, three were stable and two others had been treated and released.

Authorities said they were reviewing extensive video evidence and working with the FBI. The mall canceled its Saturday trick-or-treat event while investigators continued gathering evidence and asking witnesses to come forward.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Hages' family described her as pregnant and said her husband was with her at the store. The family was left waiting for answers as police worked to determine what led to the burst of violence inside the seasonal shop.

Witness Daniela Seabra Rios told the newspaper that she and her son were outside the mall when families began running from the building and screaming. They took cover on the floor of their car as frightened shoppers poured into the parking lot.

Another worker in the area said the sound of gunfire brought immediate confusion. Customers and employees had little time to understand what was happening before people started fleeing the store and nearby businesses.

The location made the violence especially jarring. Spirit Halloween stores are typically packed with parents and children in the final hours before Halloween, and the Fairfield store was operating inside a busy regional shopping center when the shots were fired.

CNN reported that a witness who was near the wig section heard multiple gunshots and feared she would die. She said people began running toward the back of the store as the danger unfolded.

Spirit Halloween said it was devastated by the shooting and was cooperating with law enforcement. The company closed the Fairfield store as police continued processing the scene and seeking information from the public.

Police have been careful not to get ahead of the evidence. Their description of the attack as targeted does not establish who the target was, why the shooting happened or whether any of the wounded people knew the suspect.

Those unanswered questions now sit beside one awful certainty: a family lost Constance Hages, six other people were shot, and a store meant for costumes and candy became the scene of a deadly criminal investigation.

Fairfield police asked anyone with information, recordings or firsthand knowledge to contact investigators. Until an arrest is made, the community is left waiting for the most important answer of all: who opened fire, and why?
