NEW: Top Trump DOJ Official Resigns

A top Trump-appointed Justice Department prosecutor abruptly resigned Friday, stepping down from one of the nation's most powerful federal law enforcement offices just days after Republicans suffered major losses in the midterm elec

tions.

Jason Reding Quiñones, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, announced his resignation in a statement posted to X on Nov. 6, confirming that his departure would take effect immediately.

The announcement marks another high-profile personnel change at the Justice Department as President Donald Trump's administration prepares to navigate the final two years of his second term.

Quiñones, who was nominated by Trump and confirmed by the Senate in August 2025, did not provide a reason for his decision.

"I submitted my resignation to the President as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, effective today," he wrote.

The outgoing prosecutor reflected on his years of government service, including his military career, previous work at the Justice Department and time as a Florida judge.

"From serving our Nation in uniform to serving at the Department of Justice and on the bench, public service has been the honor of my lifetime. But leading the U.S. Attorney's Office in my home district has been especially meaningful."

Quiñones also expressed gratitude to Trump and the federal prosecutors who worked alongside him.

"I am grateful to President Trump for his trust and to the extraordinary men and women of the great Southern District of Florida for their dedication, friendship, and unwavering commitment to justice and the rule of law."

"It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve alongside them and our law enforcement officers who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe."

The resignation is significant because Quiñones oversaw federal prosecutions across South Florida, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and the Florida Keys.

His office handles major investigations involving violent crime, drug trafficking, public corruption, financial fraud and international criminal organizations.

Quiñones was also tasked with overseeing a politically sensitive investigation into allegations that federal officials improperly pursued investigations involving Trump and his associates.

The inquiry examined claims surrounding earlier investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and Trump's handling of classified documents.

Those investigations became major flashpoints between Trump and his political opponents, with the president repeatedly accusing federal authorities of politically motivated misconduct.

However, the subsequent inquiry overseen by Quiñones had not produced indictments at the time of his departure, according to Reuters.

His resignation leaves questions about who will lead the office and what direction the politically sensitive investigations will take next.

Despite the sudden announcement, Quiñones' tenure included significant law enforcement initiatives.

In August, his office highlighted increased immigration prosecutions, efforts to combat violent crime and expanded enforcement against international criminal networks.

The Southern District of Florida also brought criminal charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, an action that underscored the administration's aggressive approach toward the communist regime in Havana.

Quiñones brought an extensive background in public service to the position.

A Miami native and son of a Cuban political refugee, he previously served as a prosecutor in Florida and Virginia before becoming a judge in Miami-Dade County.

He also worked in the Justice Department's National Security Division, focusing on counterterrorism and intelligence matters.

His military career spanned more than two decades of service in the U.S. Army and Air Force, including assignments involving military law and national security.

Quiñones became the first Senate-confirmed U.S. attorney of Trump's second administration when he took office in August 2025.

His departure follows another senior Justice Department resignation after Tuesday's midterm elections, although officials have not established a connection between the election results and his decision.

Attorney General Todd Blanche publicly acknowledged the resignation Friday and praised Quiñones' contributions to federal law enforcement, particularly his work targeting violent crime and international criminal activity.

Quiñones closed his announcement by expressing pride in the office's accomplishments and appreciation for the opportunity to serve.

"I leave with immense pride in what we accomplished together and profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve our great Nation."

He ended with a patriotic signoff. "God bless America."

The Trump administration has not announced a permanent successor. Quiñones' resignation takes effect immediately, leaving the Southern District of Florida facing a leadership transition less than 15 months after he assumed office.
