The fatwa, issued by the Tripoli-based institution Dar al-Ifta, begins immediately after being approved by Libya's Grand Mufti, Sadiq al-Gharyani.
The BBC reports the Islamic lawmakers argued that wearing clothing displaying the logo of the U.S. sportswear giant amounted to promoting symbols associated 'with polytheism,' or the worship of more than one god.
Islam strictly believes in the single supreme God, Allah, and thoroughly rejects polytheism.
The outlet goes on to note the original banning statement refers to another issued by its Council for Research and Sharia Studies on 5 November 2023, urging Muslims to boycott Western companies it considers supportive of Israel during the war in Gaza.

"Nike" is the name of the Greek goddess of victory (her Roman equivalent is where we get the name "Victoria.")

Her Greek name literally means "the upper hand," and she is usually depicted with two bird-like wings, which came to be used by early Christian artists to depict biblical angels (especially after Emperor Constantine converted to the faith).

The company's "swoosh" is derived from Nike's wings, which are usually lifted like an eagle about to swoop down on its prey.

I wonder if the Libyan Grand Mufti knows about all the other things that are named after Greco-Roman gods! 😂

Apparently, Allah is pretty strict about the sportswear one can buy.
