Democrat Christina Bohannan has defeated GOP Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks in the U.S. House race, flipping Iowa's 1st Congressional district
in high-stakes battleground.
With 99% of the total vote counted by the Associated Press, Bohannan received 182,396 votes or 52%, flipping the seat from Miller-Meeks who received 150,471 votes or 43%.
Iowa's 1st Congressional District is located in the Southeastern region of the state, bordering Illinois along the Mississippi River. The district encompasses 20 counties and includes major urban centers and communities such as Davenport, Iowa City, Muscatine, Burlington and Indianola.
With President Donald Trump's "complete and total endorsement," Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa.) is an American physician, military veteran and U.S. representative for Iowa's 1st Congressional District since 2021. Before her election to Congress, she served 24 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel. She also managed a private ophthalmology practice in Iowa, served as the director of the Iowa Department of Public Health and held a seat in the Iowa State Senate.

Miller-Meeks has drawn on her background as a physician and veteran to advocate for healthcare reform, border security and veterans' affairs during her time in office. She also successfully authored and introduced bipartisan legislation signed into law, including the DUMP Opioids Act, which allows the VA to collect and safely dispose of controlled substances from veterans. Additionally, she has been an active voice on energy policy as the chair of the Conservative Climate Caucus and has consistently voted for key agricultural, infrastructure and defense measures benefiting her district in Iowa.
In 2020, she won in one of the closest federal elections in modern history — by just 6 votes out of over 394,000 cast against Democrat Rita Hart. In 2024, she defeated Democrat Christina Bohannan by just 799 votes.
Bohannan (D-Iowa) is an American politician, law professor at the University of Iowa College of Law, and former environmental engineer. She served as a Democratic member of the Iowa House of Representatives from 2021 to 2023, representing the state's 85th district. Her congressional campaign focused primarily on lowering everyday costs for working families by tackling inflation, reining in corporate price-gouging and expanding access to affordable healthcare.
