I know that everyone loves The Chosen and I'm told we've all got to watch The Chosen, but will someone please explain to me what's going on here?
Okay, okay, I get the scene.
They're angels following Jesus, ready to strike the Romans and protect the Son of God as he's being betrayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. After Peter strikes the high priest's servant in the ear with his sword, Jesus tells Peter to put it away and says,
Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way? (Matthew 26:53-54)
But ... why are they running up walls? Why are they dressed like Native Americans and African women? Angels are depicted in human form as travelers, or as "men in white," but they are usually described with phrases like "glowing metal" or "flashes of lightning." The angel who rolled the stone away from Jesus' tomb "was like lightning," so that he terrified the battle-hardened guards.
What part of the Bible does the depiction of Mohican angels come from?
It looks like they Marvel-ified the show. That sure is different!
No stranger to controversy, the show is asking its audience to watch before lecturing them:
One quick theory, and then I'll get out of the way.
It could be that showrunner Dallas Jenkins is trying to show how angels are assigned different spheres of authority in different kingdoms of the earth. Because God hasn't provided us with the finer details of angelic warfare, we only see snippets like Daniel 10. In that passage, an angel visits Daniel and tells him he was delayed for 21 days because the "prince of the Persian kingdom resisted" him, but the archangel Michael came to his aid.
If that's the angelic angle Jenkins is working, the question is whether the audience will understand and appreciate his creative license.
My favorite three replies:
I better not see any golden tablets! 😂
