Exit polls reveal dire midterm signs for Trump and Republicans as crucial battleground results are delayed: Live updates

Control of Congress hangs in the balance as Americans rush to the polls to cast their final ballots in the 2026 midterm elections.

In the Senate, Democrats must flip four Republican-held seats to gain control. In the House, Democrats need to pick up just three seats.

Americans have headed to the polls in droves to make their voices heard on a slew of issues, including the cost of living and the war in Iran, while chaos erupted in several key battleground states.

The first polls close at 6pm ET and the last polls wrap up at 1am ET. Then the nation will wait as ballots are counted across the country to find out whether Republicans or Democrats will take power.

Five North Carolina polling sites to stay open following tech issues

The North Carolina State Board of Elections held an emergency meeting on Tuesday afternoon to extend voting at five precincts in four counties after technical problems caused voter issues in the day.

These counties include Wilson County, Columbus County, Hertford County and Lenoir County.

All ballots cast by voters who arrive at voting sites after 7.30pm in these precincts will be provisional votes, per state law.

As a result of the issues, first results from North Carolina are expected to be posted around 8.15pm.

Person dies at Connecticut polling place on Election Day

A person died at a polling place in Killingly, Connecticut, today, officials confirmed.

The person has not been identified, and no additional details about the death have been given. Officials did note there are no suspicious circumstances, CT Insider reported.

'It's a tragedy. A life was lost,' Ronnell Higgins, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, said at a press conference.

Total trading volume for the 2026 midterm markets has surpassed $1.7B

Kalshi's midterm election markets have generated more than $1.7 billion in trading volume, with substantial activity concentrated in several closely watched races across the platform.

In New York's 17th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Mike Lawler and Democratic challenger Cait Conley are locked in a 50-50 market.

In Louisiana's Senate race, Democrat Jamie Davis has climbed to an all-time high against Republican Julia Letlow.

Meanwhile, the Texas Senate market, featuring Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico, has surpassed $100 million in trading volume alone.

President Trump's election night party at the White House

Trump plans to watch election night results at the White House this evening, according to sources here in the building.

Although the polls and early returns are grim, the president plans to host an election night viewing reception in the East Room with staff and supporters this evening as soon as polls start closing at 7:00 pm ET.

Cabinet officials have been cycling in and out of the West Wing this afternoon, some of them meeting with thepPresident, some of them doing media interviews.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was spotted entering the West Wing. He grinned and made a crossing sign with his fingers at the press, telling them to stay away.

Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin also came out to do some interviews on television.

He briefly spoke to reporters about how he did not send ICE agents to the polls because he was not aware of any threats that made it necessary.

Later Mullin ignored reporters in the driveway before returning to the West Wing.

Republicans raise memory of Charlie Kirk to juice lagging conservative vote

Conservative figures are invoking Charlie Kirk's memory to urge voters to support Republicans in the midterms, presenting a vote for the GOP as a way to honor his legacy.

Far-right commentator Benny Johnson argued in a three-minute video that political violence against conservative figures, including Kirk's assassination and the 2024 attempt on President Donald Trump's life, showed America was facing a much bigger moral and spiritual battle than ordinary politics.

He claimed that people on the left had celebrated the attacks and warned conservatives that they and their families could also be at risk.

He framed the midterms as a fight between good and evil, darkness and light, rather than simply a contest between Republicans and Democrats, before urging his followers to vote.

Other prominent conservatives echoed the message. Many shared a 2018 post from Kirk reading: 'Don't ever vote for a Democrat.'

Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, posted a message of her own, writing: 'PRAY. SHOW UP. PRAY. VOTE. PRAY.'

Donald Trump Jr shared a picture of Kirk on the day he was killed, with the wording, 'vote like the other side will keep you from talking.'

National Republican Senatorial Committee and Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan form ballot recount fund

The National Republican Senatorial Committee and Alaska's GOP incumbent Dan Sullivan, who is running for re-election, have formed a fundraising committee called the 'NRSC Recount Fund,' a Tuesday afternoon filing posted to the Federal Election Commission reveals.

NRSC communications director Joanna Rodriguez told the Washington Sun the new move is supposed to ensure 'every vote is counted fairly and accurately in each and every state.'

Rodiguez added: 'We will be ready for all contingencies, including recounts, should they be necessary.'
