A major police operation continued throughout the night after tactical officers stormed a basement carpark and later arrested a man 5km away following an alleged armed break and enter in Sydney's south-west.
Heavily armed officers, police dogs and detectives swarmed a unit complex in Northumberland Street, Liverpool about 5pm on Friday while investigating an alleged aggravated home invasion that occurred 10km away in Smithfield seven hours earlier.
A 48-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were at home at the time when three men, one armed with a shortened firearm, allegedly broke into The Horsley Drive home and threatened the pair.
The woman suffered minor injuries when she was struck in the arm with an object. The man was not injured.
The men allegedly stole the keys to the man's Audi before they fled in the vehicle.
Police spent much of the day tracking the vehicle's whereabouts before it was dumped in the underground carpark in Liverpool.
The Audi has since been recovered and seized for forensic examination.
Shocked residents at the unit complex reported seeing a heavy police presence as officers and detectives moved through the cordoned-off crime scene.
