Democratic Senator Chris Murphy was rushed to hospital after suffering a stroke.

The 53-year-old Connecticut politician started feeling numbness in his arm on Saturday while at his son's hockey game, his office revealed on Sunday.

His chief of staff Allison Hewitt said that Murphy is 'awake and alert' in the hospital. He was moved to Johns Hopkins in Maryland while he recovers.

Murphy was on the campaign trail ahead of the midterms, and he was expected to be in New Hampshire on Sunday.

Hewitt said: 'He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment.

'The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.'

Murphy, who has served in the US Senate since 2013, previously also served in the US House of Representatives for six years.

Widely thought to be a potential 2028 White House contender, Murphy has been crisscrossing the country in the midterms and has also made stops in Michigan, Minnesota, and Florida.

The weekend's health scare makes Murphy the latest prominent lawmaker to battle serious medical issues while serving in office.

Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was hospitalized earlier this year and spent months away from the Capitol, while New Jersey Representative Tom Kean Jr. revealed over the summer that a previously unexplained absence he had from Congress was caused by a bout of depression.

Several senators have also suffered strokes in recent years.

Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen was hospitalized after a minor stroke in 2022, while New Mexico Senator Ben Ray Lujan suffered one the same year.

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman suffered a near-fatal stroke while running for the Senate in 2022, and still is often spotted in the Capitol with the aid of a live transcription device.

Since his election to the Senate, Murphy has championed issues such as gun control and fought back against the Trump administration on foreign policy.

The Connecticut Senator also serves as a junior member of Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's leadership team.
