Providence broke one of the largest records during The Weather Channel-branded Winter Storm Hernando, which blasted the Northeast in the form of a nor’easter bomb cyclone, and is now the biggest snowstorm in the history of the Rhode Island city.
As of Monday, a total of 32.8 inches of snow fell in Providence, with that figure anticipated to increase prior to the conclusion of the blizzard in the early hours Tuesday morning.
The record for the largest snowstorm ever in the city has been shattered, and not just that, but Providence also set a new mark for the snowiest day of all-time. (RELATED: Nor’easter Officially Intensifies Into Bomb Cyclone As Pressure Drops Dramatically)

The impacts from the blizzard started Sunday evening in Providence and persisted into the night and through Monday.

Snowfall amounts kept rising as Monday evolved, leading to Rhode Island landing some of the largest accumulations in the entire Northeast that was impacted by Hernando.
Blizzard conditions were caused Monday as a result of wind gusts that reached 60 mph, tagged along with strong, blowing snow and visibility that was limited. (RELATED: Potent Nor’easter Bomb Cyclone To Blast Northeast With Largest Snowstorm In Years)
The snowfall that dropped Monday almost lines up with the annual average for Providence, which is set at 36.6 inches. When the final numbers come in, it’s anticipated that the city will eclipse that figure by itself Monday.
The prior record for the snowiest day in Providence was 19 inches, which was set in the Blizzard of ’96.
