Disney Revives “Halloweentown” After 20 Years With Upcoming Film

Disney is bringing the magic of "Halloweentown" back to life, with a fifth installment reportedly in early development at Disney Channel and Disney+.

According to The Wrap, Lily Houghton and Ryan Koehn are developing a screenplay based on characters created by Paul Bernbaum for the original 1998 Disney Channel classic, reviving the beloved franchise two decades after its last installment.

Details surrounding the upcoming film remain a mystery, including whether familiar faces will return. Kimberly J. Brown, who originated the role of Marnie Piper, has not been confirmed, nor has Sara Paxton, who replaced her in the franchise's fourth installment, "Return to Halloweentown," in 2006.

Houghton recently penned the horror-comedy "Forbidden Fruits," starring Lili Reinhart and Lola Tung, and produced Netflix's upcoming young-adult horror series "The Body," scheduled to premiere next month. Koehn previously worked on the writing team behind the "Gossip Girl" reboot from 2021 to 2023.

The original "Halloweentown" film introduced audiences to 13-year-old Marnie Piper, who discovers her family's magical ancestry. Its success spawned three sequels: "Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge" in 2001, "Halloweentown High" in 2004, and "Return to Halloweentown" in 2006. The fourth film attracted an impressive 7.5 million viewers during its premiere, dominating basic cable ratings that day and ranking as Disney Channel's fourth most-watched original movie at the time, according to Complex.
