President Trump signs proclamation designating the Oval Office as a National Monument

President Donald Trump signed a presidential proclamation Thursday afternoon that established the Oval Office as a national monument under the Antiquities Act.

The move designates the Oval Office, the Outer Oval Office, and the Cabinet Room as the Oval Office National Monument and is intended to ensure its preservation, proper care and management.

"The Oval Office stands as one of the most recognizable and historically significant spaces in the United States," the proclamation reads. "Decisions of profound national and international consequence have been made within its walls.  It has hosted heads of state, shaped the daily conduct of the executive branch, and become a symbol of the American Presidency itself."

The proclamation acknowledged the White House is already an historic landmark, but noted that the "Oval Office merits specific recognition and protective management as a discrete historic structure of national significance."

The order also directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to develop and implement a management plan with relevant executive departments, agencies and offices that prioritizes the preservation of the Oval Office.

The order builds on the president's mission to restore beauty to Washington, D.C., and comes after a task force assigned to that mission cleaned hundreds of graffiti sites, fixed over 2,300 light fixtures, repaired dozens of fountains, and cleaned and repaired the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial.
