Secretary of State Marco Rubio Responds To Rumors He Will Resign To Launch 2028 Presidential Run

Secretary of State Marco Rubio Responds To Rumors He Will Resign To Launch 2028 Presidential Run

A lot of rumors have been flying after the 2026 midterms.

One of the biggest rumors circulating among legacy media outlets was that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would leave his post to begin a 2028 Presidential campaign.

However, those rumors appear to be false.

On Thursday, Rubio, in an interview with The New York Times, shared that he had no plans to leave his appointed position.

The New York Times reported more on Rubio's response:

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday dismissed reports that he was planning to leave the Trump administration and declined to answer questions about his political future.

Working for President Trump until the end of his term has "always been my plan," he said in an interview with The New York Times.

Responding to the news reports that he was mulling an exit, Mr. Rubio said, "I don't know where these things come from, to be honest with you."

"I love the work I'm doing," he continued. "And plus I always laugh when they say he's going to leave his job. I go, 'Which one?'"

Mr. Rubio, who is also Mr. Trump's national security adviser, declined to answer questions about whether he was considering running for president in 2028.

"I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore," he said in the interview, in his White House office. "I just won't do it."

Mr. Rubio has said that he would support Vice President JD Vance if he ran for president.

"JD is a very good friend of mine," he told NBC News in May. "If JD runs for president, I think he'd be a phenomenal candidate. I've said publicly, and I'll say it again, I'll be the first person to sign up and support him."

The Hill covered the State Department's response to the rumors:

The State Department called recent reports of Secretary of State Marco Rubio mulling an exit from the Trump administration following the Democratic Party's victories in the midterm elections a "baseless hoax."
Reports surfaced Thursday from outlets such as the Independent and Bloomberg that said Rubio was weighing on leaving the Trump administration as he allegedly prepares a 2028 presidential run.

"This is complete and total fake news based on the word of anonymous sources, befitting a tabloid," Dylan Johnson, assistant secretary of State for global public affairs, told The Hill. "The Secretary has not discussed leaving his role and he will continue to proudly serve in President Trump's administration long after this fake news is revealed as yet another baseless hoax."

The Independent report cited an unnamed "Washington insider" source who said Rubio should distance himself from the Iran war, adding that it would make sense for him to "step down and leave the administration."

Johnson, in a social media post Thursday, responded to the Independent's article, calling it "fake news from made-up anonymous 'sources.'"
