El-Sayed rakes in $1.2M after Stevens defection

Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed raised $1.2 million, just hours after Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., shocked Michigan Democrats by endorsing his opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich.

Rogers and El-Sayed are locked in one of the closest contests of the midterm cycle. Stevens, who lost the party primary to El-Sayed, had supported him for most of the campaign, but abruptly endorsed Rogers on Sunday, earning near-universal condemnation from Democrats and applause from Republicans,

But the gambit has handed El-Sayed a financial windfall, as he was able to raise the $1.2 million in just four hours of Stevens backing his opponent, Politico reported.

The election is on Tuesday, however, and it remains unclear whether El-Sayed will be effectively able to deploy those funds.
