At least nine people are dead in Karachi, Pakistan, after hundreds of protesters stormed the U.S. consulate in that city in the wake of the U.S. killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khomeini.

A further 25 sustained injuries in clashes with police, the Associated Press reported. Police officials confirmed that demonstrators had set fire to a nearby police station and managed to break the windows of the consulate building, though the authorities were able to break up the riot, and it does not appear that anyone entered the facility.

The clashes in Pakistan come as the American strikes on Iran have escalated into a regional war, with Iran blockading the Strait of Hormuz and launching strikes on American facilities in neighboring nations.
