A propaganda outlet directly under control of the Chinese government shelled out millions of dollars to U.S. media outlets in exchange for favorable coverage of the communist regime in Beijing.
The paid-for content typically appeared as multi-page advertising supplements called "China Watch," which were designed to resemble regular newspaper layouts.

The articles within these inserts promoted favorable perspectives on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) policies.
As the 'About' page of WorldTribune.com states: This newspaper, "Does NOT and has NEVER published editorial content directly or indirectly paid for by sponsors, investors, donors or funding sources."
The Justice Department in the first Trump Administration revealed China Daily paid the Wall Street Journal nearly $6 million and The Washington Post nearly $4.6 million.
Others receiving the communist propaganda outlet's cash included The New York Times, Time magazine, Foreign Policy magazine, the Financial Times, the Los Angels Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Houston Chronicle, the Boston Globe, and USA Today.
Pre-Elon Musk Twitter received more than $260,000 of the commie cash.
During the U.S. 2018 midterm elections, the China Daily purchased a four-page "China Watch" insert in The Des Moines Register, the leading newspaper in Iowa. The insert included a report in which the China Daily criticized President Donald Trump's tariff measures and emphasized the benefits of free trade for Iowa farmers, prompting a strong response from Trump, attacking China for meddling in the election.

Though media insist they stopped accepting the China Daily payments years ago, the CCP's influence operations in the United States remain highly active, evolving, and embedded across multiple sectors. U.S. intelligence agencies, federal investigators, and congressional committees continue to track and attempt to dismantle these operations.
Congressional, intelligence agency, and media reports say those operations include:
Embedded telecom networks: A bipartisan investigation by the House Select Committee on the CCP revealed that U.S. subsidiaries of state-owned giants like China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom remain deeply integrated into commercial U.S. data centers and internet exchange points, despite federal restrictions.
State-sponsored cyber espionage: Advanced persistent threat groups linked to China's Ministry of State Security—such as Volt Typhoon and Salt Typhoon—actively execute wire-tapping and cyber-reconnaissance campaigns targeting U.S. telecommunications and political entities.
Influence operations targeting state and Local officials: The CCP's influence apparatus, known as the "United Front Work Department," has aggressively shifted focus toward municipal and state-level politics. This strategy bypasses federal scrutiny to shape local policy and build long-term influence with rising political figures.
Election interference: Chinese operations continuously deploy automated propaganda and disinformation on social media to stoke polarization and influence voter perceptions regarding major U.S. domestic issues. The "China Lobby": Chinese entities actively utilize K Street. Dozens of U.S. lobbyists maintain active contracts with companies partially or fully owned by Chinese state entities, navigating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and Lobbying Disclosure Act to push pro-Beijing policy narratives.
In a post to LinkedIN, retired USG Senior Intelligence officer Timothy Gill noted: "Newly declassified documents revealed how the CIA & Intelligence community deliberately hid Chinese interference in the 2020 election from President Trump, keeping information out of his daily briefings.
"Trump released batches of declassified intelligence records exposing how the CIA worked to help China and Democrats downplay threats, hide interference, and change reports during the 2020 election cycle."
Gill added:
"The CIA actively worked against Trump throughout his term.
"Officials in the intelligence community stripped out all content that might support Trump's reelection efforts.
"Former CIA officer Pedro Israel Orta, who worked at the agency during the Trump Administration, reported that the CIA did not recognize Trump as president and refused to put his picture on the wall, breaking long-standing custom for all previous presidents.
"A November 2020 email among intelligence officials described how they deliberately altered one of the pending President's Daily Briefs to avoid any information about China interfering in the 2020 election."
