President Donald Trump may finally be tipping his hand in the race to succeed him, privately telling donors that Vice President JD Vance is the Republican he wants to see in the White House after his presidency.
"At the end of the day, we need to elect JD," Trump reportedly said during an Oval Office meeting with donors about two weeks ago, according to a source familiar with the conversation. The Washington Post first reported the remarks.
While Trump has publicly praised both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the private comment is his clearest indication yet that he's looking at his vice president as the party's standard-bearer for 2028.

Two Republican senators are raising doubts about a push to send former White House COVID adviser Anthony Fauci to the Justice Department, even as Sen. Rand Paul presses ahead with a criminal contempt referral.
Paul, R-Ky., said Tuesday that he believes the votes are there to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress after the former health official repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment during questioning.
Rather than wait for a full Senate vote, Paul is considering sending the referral directly to the Justice Department, a move that could avoid the 60-vote threshold typically needed to advance the matter.

Florida health officials are warning residents to steer clear of armadillos as the state continues to see a rise in leprosy cases.
Many infections have been linked to contact with the animals, which are known carriers of the bacteria that causes the disease. Officials say the vast majority of Florida's recent cases have been concentrated in Central Florida.
The Florida Department of Health reported 17 leprosy cases statewide as of July 23, according to WFLA. About 81% of those infections have been reported in Volusia, Brevard, Lake, Orange and Seminole counties.
The increase follows a record-setting 2025, when Florida recorded 36 cases, the highest annual total since the state began tracking the disease in 1992. State data shows 26 of those infections were acquired in Florida, one originated elsewhere in the U.S., and two were contracted overseas. Sen. Mitch McConnell is heading home after nearly two months away from public life following a serious fall that sidelined the longtime Kentucky Republican.
McConnell announced Thursday that he has been discharged from a rehabilitation facility and will continue recovering from home after suffering a fall at his Kentucky residence in mid-June that left him briefly unconscious and hospitalized. During his recovery, he also developed a mild case of pneumonia but did not suffer a stroke, heart attack, or broken bones, according to previous updates from his office.
"Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) was hospitalized Sunday after a hit-and-run vehicle crash in Toledo, Ohio, her office confirmed in a statement.
