The United States made it an entire quarter of a millennium before this became a real possibility, yet here we are.

For the first time in its 250 year history, a foreign sovereign will vote in America's elections (though to be fair, that sovereign is from Illinois!).

Not only is this the first foreign sovereign to vote in America, it's the first time a pope has ever voted in a governmental election.

(Although popes have often been politically involved through other means, if you know what I mean).

He may be the leader of the Catholic Church, but Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV is still a registered voter in Illinois and requested a mail ballot for the midterm elections.
That's according to the Will County clerk's office.
'Robert Francis Prevost is on the list of individuals who requested a vote by mail ballot for the upcoming election,' Kim Fladhammer, Will County clerk's office chief of staff, told the Chicago Sun-Times. The pope, who is registered to a New Lenox address, made the request Oct. 3.

While living abroad, Prevost has regularly voted by mail in Illinois, which does not have an absentee voting system and instead allows vote by mail for any citizen for any reason.

Prevost has voted in both Republican and Democratic primaries in the past, although he skipped this year's primary elections. He also voted in the general elections in 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2024.

Prevost's brother is a known MAGA man but the pope himself has chimed in on liberal policy priorities for years, including pushing climate change and pro-immigration policies.
