Florida parents say homeowner should be arrested after shooting son, 16, who went around kicking doors in ill-advised Halloween prank

Florida parents say homeowner should be arrested after shooting son, 16, who went around kicking doors in ill-advised Halloween prank

The parents of a Florida teenager who was shot on Halloween after kicking a neighbor's door and running away as part of a prank say the homeowner should be arrested.

The 16-year-old boy, who has not been publicly identified by authorities, was shot around 11pm in the Shenandoah area of Davie, which is about 32 miles north of Miami, according to NBC6 South Florida.

His stepfather, who did not want to be identified, said the teen was out with a group of friends and was doing some 'doorbell ditching' when they repeatedly kicked a door and ran away.

The homeowner came out, 'chased them down the street' and fired two gunshots, striking the teen in the arm twice and causing him to be rushed to the hospital.

His mother said he had a 'huge surgery' earlier this week, in which doctors 'opened the whole arm.'

The extent of his injuries was unclear, as the frightened mom called for authorities to arrest the shooter.

'They need to find this guy, and they know who they are,' she told the outlet. 'They know. So why he's not being arrested?'

The suspect has not been publicly named and no one has been arrested.

The Davie Police Department told the Daily Mail on Tuesday morning that the shooting was being actively investigated and that no additional information could be released.

Police also told the Daily Mail that the teen was in stable condition after being shot.

Meanwhile, the teen's stepfather insisted that the homeowner was not 'defending his property' when the shooting transpired.

'To come out with a gun and start shooting on Halloween night, with all kinds of kids all over the place, to just start opening fire [and] pop off two rounds,' he said. 'How irresponsible is that?'

It was not exactly clear where the shooting took place, though a large police presence was spotted in the 14300 block of Southwest 20th Street afterwards, WSVN reported.

Authorities were seen cordoning off the area with crime scene tape.

The stepdad said the suspected shooter should have instead 'called the police department' and filed a report.

'That's what you do,' he told NBC 6.

Pictures after the shooting showed the teen sporting a bloody wound on his arm as he lay in the hospital.

The family hired an attorney after the shooting, who was told that Davie police forwarded the case to the Broward State Attorney's office for review.

The attorney's office will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted, according to the outlet.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Broward State Attorney's Office for comment.
