In previous articles (here and here), I detailed wins for conservative principles, law-and-order candidates, and the cause of liberty in Latin America. That's all good, but we should not ignore the Caribbean.
In Jamaica, the center-right Labour (yes, the "Labour" party is conservative in the land of Cool Runnings and Rastafarianism) government has won power in three elections in a row! Prime Minister Andrew Michael Holness has enacted aggressive public safety reforms, cracking down on crime and advertising the country as a renewed tourist destination. Property rights and tax reform have turned the island into a business destination rather than a flight.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines moved to the right last year, throwing out a two-decade left-wing communist regime. The Dominican Republic remains a model of sane, safe, and sound government, forming stronger ties with the United States while enforcing its immigration laws and protecting its sovereignty—even rebuffing detractors from the American Left! Antigua and Barbuda is prospering under a center-right government, as well.
With the waves of conservative, liberty-minded reforms making their way throughout the region, only one nation stands out for the worse, overrun by the left, descending into quasi-communist tyranny: Barbados.
Lying on the edge of the Caribbean plate, close to Venezuela, the country has not only elected a left-wing Labour government twice in a row, but the party has won every seat in parliament. Reports of voter fraud, vote-buying, and outright intimidation are the norm in this country.
No surprise that the Labour Party holds unprecedented power in this island nation. There are no checks and balances in Barbados!
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has been making a big show of herself in one global conference after another. She helped lead the post-colonial struggle for Barbados to become an independent parliamentary democracy, no longer recognizing the lordship of the English Monarchy. However, independence from the Crown did not bring freedom to the people.
Barbados has turned into an unwelcome tourist trap for many seeking peace, quiet, and beauty on a Caribbean cruise. Crime is rampant on the island, and a culture of oppression dominates the region. Mottley and her crew have also plotted to flood their island nation with mass immigration, pushing out the native locals, incentivizing corporate cheap labor, and entrenching a country fit for only the elites at the expense of the grassroots and everyday Bajan people.
She wants LGBT rights (rebelling against the conservative, Christian character of her country and her citizens), and celebrated the Barbados' Supreme Court's judicial activism after it struck down the nation's anti-sodomy statutes.
She wants globalist intrusion, giving frequent speeches to the United Nations, hoping to increase her chances of becoming the next UN Secretary General. She supported the health mandates, although she declined to support vaccine passports, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She is 100% behind the reparations cult, demanding that the United Kingdom and the British people pay back big money to the island nation for the centuries-old wrongs of slavery.
Mottley also targets political enemies and attacks the liberties of her own people, without any reserve or shame.
Marcia Weekes, a Christian broadcaster and dance instructor for Praise Academy of Dance, witnessed her dance troupe disqualified from a seminal Barbados dance competition because her dancing stars told a story about a young girl who struggles with her gender identity, only in the end to settle with her birth sex. This theme was considered too controversial, and political appointees on the judicial panel disqualified them. Ms. Weekes did not tolerate this anti-Christian discrimination, and she sued the organization that hosted the competition.
Then there's Mottley's notorious treatment of inventor David Weekes (no relation to Marcia Weekes). In 2007, Weekes developed a solution to monitor and track border crossings, all to assist airline industries as well as sovereign states so that they could keep track of persons entering and exiting their respective countries.
Mottley, aided and abetted by the CARICOM Secretariat, misappropriated the solution from David Weekes, who sued in court to recoup his losses and restore full power over the patent. Thwarted for 19 years by the Barbados Courts, he has never been able to pursue/prosecute his claim and has been denied his constitutional rights.
David faced repeated threats on his life, including a house-bombing. He fled to the United States and renounced his Barbados citizenship.
Then there's the anti-white racism of Mottley's government. Native-born white Barbadian Jane Goddard has faced incessant legal persecution from Mottley, which Goddard is certain is racially based. Mottley's has filed multiple lawsuits against Goddard's family property. The Goddards have fought nearly thirty years to retain their property rights, only to have their natural rights thrown out the window with repeated delays.
Following from this vexatious litigation, Goddard faced arrest and financial ruin from Mottley's government for trumped-up charges due to a defamation case. Three years ago, Goddard fled the island and settled in Florida, but still seeks justice for herself and her family.
On the island, encroachment against civil liberties has increased, as well.
Mottley pushed a Cybercrime Bill in 2024 allowing the government to arrest anyone for disseminating "hate speech," which is effectively any speech the government hates. The protests have been loud across the island nation, and Mottley backed off, sending it to a Select Committee, where it still awaits a vote. The fact that such legislation exists, and that the head of state submitted such intrusive legislation, should frighten not just every Barbadian, but the whole region.
Mottley is an RH prime minister, for sure. The world needs to know about this tyrant. Perhaps President Trump can find a way to arrest her for cause, the same way he took down Venezuela's Maduro. Outside help must come in to save Barbados from its communist captors.
