Although history suggests Republicans will have a difficult path to retaining their congressional majorities after this year's midterm elections, the head of the Republican National Committee remains confident in the party's chances.
Joe Gruters laid out his optimistic outlook during a recent NewsNation appearance.
As The Hill reported:
"Here's the bottom line. Go to Cook Political Report. We start at 212 likely seats. There's 18 toss-up seats. We need six. I bet you we win 10," Gruters said about seats in the House in an appearance on "The Hill Sunday" on NewsNation with Blake Burman, who filled in for host Chris Stirewalt. "I think we're going to hold the majorities in both the House and the Senate."
Gruters said he was "very optimistic" about his prediction.
"I'm optimistic because I think that people know that common sense and the hope that you can achieve the American dream is 1,000 times better than the misery and despair in the direction that the Democrats wanna take us with these socialist-type policies and having tens of millions of noncitizens flood our borders without any type of merit-based-type system," he continued. "It's very clear."
Even some in the Democrat Party agree that a sudden leftward lurch during the 2026 primaries has put the outcome of November's general elections in doubt:

Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico needs to flip some Republican voters this November to win in the largest red state in the U.S., but his opponents are calling out claims of Republicans backing him as inauthentic, if not fraudulent.
“Any chance that Talarico has building any type of Republican coalition is a pipe dream for him,” Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters told Fox News Digital in an interview. “Nobody is going to follow him. He's completely out of touch with Texans.”
Gruters’ rebuke came after women voters interviewed on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” claimed to be Republican crossover supporters, only to have longstanding ties to Democrats and anti-President Donald Trump groups — not exactly people that would be voting for Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton in one of the Senate’s biggest ticket races in the battle for the majority.
