What are the odds?

According to a memo from Milwaukee County's budget office, an automated system somehow managed to reverse the positive and negative signs on a couple of entries. That resulted in a $4.56 million error.

Math is hard in Milwaukee County, apparently! At least before the gubernatorial election.

Here's ABC 12, because this one is hard to believe:

Milwaukee County's proposed 2027 budget counts on $4.56 million in savings that never existed because of an automated calculation error, officials said Wednesday. The news came a day after County Executive David Crowley was elected Wisconsin governor ...
The error occurred in a newly automated process used to allocate equipment purchases and depreciation. The memo says positive and negative signs were reversed on two airport-related entries: a $4.49 million depreciation contribution and $2.21 million in airport revenue.

A county run by the same guy who reportedly was offered a bunch of money to drop out of the race ... and did (before throwing his hat back in the ring).

Of course, Crowley's team had to comment on this most recent budget glitch:

County Executive Crowley is aware of an error discovered in an automated formula used to calculate one aspect of the budget, a process previously done manually. Once identified, the Office of Strategy, Budget and Performance acted immediately to create a solution and correct the formula to prevent a recurrence. The County Executive is confident the issue is resolved and that Milwaukee County will end 2027 with a balanced budget.

Nothing to see here, folks. Just a routine sign flip in the new system Milwaukee County is using to help ~~Democrats win elections~~ balance their budget.
