The Archers listeners left shocked after Radio 4 show drops three product names into ten-minute episode

It is the everyday tale of country folk untouched by the harsh realities of the outside world.

So listeners of The Archers were shocked when the Radio 4 soap dropped three product names into a ten–minute episode – frozen food chain Iceland,

KitKats and Penguin bars.

Now there are fears the move last month was a trial run by the BBC to test waters for placing adverts in shows in a step towards a more commercial model.

The episode followed the biggest week in the soap's year, with Ambridge's first lesbian wedding, held during a storm, ending with abattoir boss Vince Casey in hospital asking partner Elizabeth for a KitKat.

One fan, Hilary Currie, posted: 'I noticed Iceland and KitKat references. What's going on? It didn't seem very Archers.'

Joan Dynes Reynolds replied: 'Maybe it's a new revenue stream. Allowed because it's how people really talk – and offered to companies in return for payment. Or maybe the BBC is testing waters for adverts.'

Another listener said: 'It is odd since the Archers usually goes to bizarre lengths to avoid mentioning brands. Wasn't there an episode with Tom complaining about stepping on 'building bricks' when he would just say Lego?'

Fans have been in uproar since the BBC said it was ditching plans to build a new studio for the soap in its Birmingham home of 75 years.

More than 100 current and former cast members have written to director–general Matt Brittin saying the decision would risk 'ripping out the heart of Ambridge'.

In a Green Paper last year, the Government raised the prospect of the BBC introducing adverts into digital products, including its website and the streaming services iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

Last night the BBC denied the plugs for Iceland, KitKat and Penguin were paid adverts.

A spokesman said: 'Nor was it product placement or part of any commercial arrangement and there are no plans to introduce advertising within the BBC.

'The occasional mention of brands, reflecting real–life and everyday speech, has long been a feature across BBC drama, including The Archers.'
