A woman in Italy won a one-million Euro prize on an instant-win lottery ticket, but when the machine flagged the win as "non-payable," she took that to mean there was nothing to pay out, so she tossed the ticket at the store and went home.
Then when she got home, a family member told her that her usual numbers had won the huge prize.
It was then that she realized her mistake.
Her winning ticket was "non-payable" because the prize was too large to cash out in the store!
The woman rushed back to where she had purchased the ticket, only to discover that the trash had already been taken out.
Roberto Nicola Toscano, the administrator of the waste management company in the area where the prize-winning ticket was bought, told The Guardian:
We reconstructed the journey of the ticket, without much hope of finding it, as it had already been picked up by a garbage truck.
Luckily for the already-lucky winner, they were able to stop the garbage truck and have it searched before it was taken to the landfill.
After more than a day of searching through countless worthless ticket stubs, sanitation workers finally located the prize-winning ticket.
Toscano went on to say,
Among them was the stub we were looking for, which was miraculously still in one piece.
He said when he called the winner to let her know the ticket had been found, she burst into tears.
What a stressful couple of days that must have been for her knowing that over a million dollars was on the line after a silly mistake.
The woman was required to pay the additional costs incurred by the sanitation workers' search efforts, but hopefully they'll get some kind of reward for the literal garbage they had to go through for her.
