Cybersecurity student, 21, found dead days after vanishing near Niagara Falls

A Rochester University student was found dead after he was reported missing for over a week, school officials said.

Maximilian 'Max' Cardone, who was a Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) student, went missing on October 21, police said.

The school filed a missing report a day after they were alerted about the 21-year-old student.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office shared the news online and said that his last known location was near Niagara Falls on October 21 around 11am.

But in a tragic update, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Dr Sandra Johnson confirmed that Cardone had died on Friday.

Johnson shared a heartbreaking message with the RIT community and extended condolences to his family, friends and classmates.

'I have difficult news to share with you all today. Maximilian (Max) Cardone, the RIT student who was recently reported missing, has passed away,' Johnson said.

Cardone was an Albany local who came to RIT for higher studies.

He joined the university in Fall 2023 and was pursuing a degree in cybersecurity at Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.

RIT was Cardone's first and only choice, his family told Johnson. 'He took great pride in being part of the community,' she added.

The vice president asked students to use resources available at the university as they processed this news.

She added that information regarding services was not available and additional information would be shared when appropriate.

'Please care for yourselves and one another. We extend our deepest sympathies to Max's family, friends, classmates, and all those who knew him,' Johnson concluded.

The cause of death had not been released.

The case was transferred to The New York State Police and the New York State Park Police, Sergeant Brendan Hurley said.

The Daily Mail has contacted RIT and police authorities for more details.
