"This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life," said Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) about her decision to freeze her eggs, a process she recently chose to livestream on her Instagram account. She went so far as to post a video of herself injecting fertility medications in a green room before going on ABC News' "This Week" and formally announcing her decision on the show.

The idea that egg freezing allows women to gain more control over their lives is popular, and it's certainly a comfort to many women who feel they aren't ready for motherhood but don't want to forgo that potential. However, for many women that sense of control is at least in part an illusion.
