The Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking to deport an Afghan alien after filing the first-ever case in a decades-old Alien Terrorist Removal Court (ATRC), according to a Thursday press release.
Congress created the ATRC in 1996 as part of its Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, a bill aimed at combating international terrorism, according to the Federal Judicial Center. The court had lain dormant prior to the DOJ’s filing this month. The ATRC was designed to allow the government to deport terrorist aliens quickly without disclosing classified information to the public.
