A grass fire at London's Heathrow Airport forced one of its runways to close this evening, with passengers warned disruption will continue for the rest of the day.

Runway 27L was closed for around an hour while the airport's fire service battled the blaze. 

Witnesses said crew from four fire engines 'quickly brought the blaze under control'.

The closure happened at peak time for the airport, which normally has two operational runways. The reduced capacity meant takeoffs and landings were delayed, with several arriving flights diverted to other English airports.

Authorities said delays to schedule departures would stretch into the evening. 

A spokesperson said: 'Due to a grass area fire 27L has had to be temporarily closed and therefore we will be 27R single runway operations [until further notice].'

The spokesman said operations on the affected runway resumed at around 6.45pm. 'Sorry for the inconvenience,' they added.

Flights from Newcastle, Aberdeen and Boston are believed to be among those that landed at other airports. 

A Minnesota curmudgeon has been charged after he allegedly placed a homemade spike strip along a popular bike path to take petty revenge on child cyclists using his yard as a shortcut.

Kyle James Steffen, 39, is accused of installing the device outside his home, which sits along popular Goodview Park in the small city of Wyoming, earlier this year.

Officers were called to his $366,000 home on April 28 after a neighbor reported that Steffen was yelling at her children to stay out of his yard, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Daily Mail.

When they arrived on scene, police saw a three-foot-long and five-inch-wide piece of plastic anchored into the grass next to his home, the filing said. 

There were about 40 three-inch screws sticking straight up from the plastic strip, according to the complaint.

Officers noted bicycle tracks running under and around the strip and said it appeared that local children would bike through Steffen's yard as a shortcut into the park.

A two-Michelin-starred restaurant has been awarded a top hygiene rating after receiving a one-star verdict over flies, raw lobster and a dirty knife.

Ynyshir, located near Machynlleth in west Wales, was given the lowest possible rating following a hygiene inspection last November.

The report released by Ceredigion County Council found that the exclusive £468-a-head restaurant fell short in its 'layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control'. 

It found that the correct checks had not been carried out to serve raw lobster and a rug hanging in the kitchen was not able to be cleaned properly.

Inspectors discovered that the safe management of ingredients including birch tree sap, aged pigeon and wild garlic was deemed to be inadequate.

They also observed that a knife used for preparing beef for burgers was 'dirty' and there was 'an accumulation of flies' on a paper sticky strip in the prep room near the walk-in chiller. 

Officials consequently said a 'major improvement' was required for the management of food safety and the cleanliness of the facilities.

The number of obese adults in England has doubled to 14.3million since the UK's first obesity strategy was published in 1992, damning new analysis reveals.

John Major's Conservative government vowed to cut obesity among men by a quarter and women by a third in its pioneering 'Health of the Nation' document but rates subsequently soared.

Since then, a further 13 national obesity strategies have been published, each of which has failed to stem the crisis, the King's Fund think tank says.

Its latest research shows there are 7.2 million more adults living with obesity than would be the case if rates had stayed the same as 1993, when the Health Survey for England first published obesity prevalence data.

The percentage of adults who were either obese or severely obese rose from 15 per cent to 30 per cent from 1993 to 2024, the most recent year available.

A black Democratic candidate running to be the next governor of Wisconsin  complained that it is a 'slur' to refer to him as an 'establishment' option.

David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, told a rally that he finds the characterization insulting earlier this week.

Crowley is running against socialist candidate Francesca Hong, who has faced scrutiny from opponents for several extreme far-left positions she has taken in the past.

She has portrayed Crowley as the establishment choice, citing his endorsement by the incumbent governor and his substantial fundraising advantage in recent weeks. 

Polls show Crowley is trailing Hong by double digits with just a week to go before the August 11 primary despite her controversial stances.

A former Navy search-and-rescue swimmer suffered burns all over his body while using a popular Amazon-sold tabletop fire pit device, a lawsuit claims. 

Anthony Trevino, 31, claimed he suffered severe burns while trying to refuel the portable backyard fire pit in September 2025.   

The injuries occurred after the fire pit allegedly exploded, causing 'gruesome third-degree burn injuries to his face, ears, neck, torso, arms, hands, and fingers.'

The explosion was so severe that it melted a nearby light and charred the balcony fencing, according to court documents.

Trevino was 'hospitalized for many weeks,' and claims certain injuries and scars will remain for the rest of his life.

'I never imagined a product sold to me as 'safe and easy' would do this to me in my own home,' Trevino said in a statement. 

The product, made by Colsen Fire Pits and Gusar, LLC and sold by Amazon, is a tabletop fire pit fueled by rubbing alcohol.

The lawsuit, filed August 5 in San Diego Superior Court, accused Amazon and Colsen Fire Pits of selling the device despite knowing it was a 'defective and hazardous product known to have caused numerous burn injuries.' 

Family members of the late Charlie Kirk wept quietly in a Provo, Utah, courtroom during a preliminary hearing last month as they watched new security video evidence prosecutors say shows his alleged murderer Tyler Robinson.

Residents of an exclusive Lake Tahoe community are searching for answers after someone poisoned 16 mature pine trees in the latest attack in a years-long series of vandalism incidents that have damaged nearly 30 trees and caused more than $300,000 in losses.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is investigating after employees with the Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) discovered the apparent poisoning at Burnt Cedar Beach in Incline Village, Nevada, on Sunday. 

Authorities believe the trees were poisoned sometime between 11.30am on August 1 and 5am on August 2.

It marked the third reported tree poisoning this year and the fifth since 2022, according to SFGATE.

Workers contacted deputies after noticing a strong chemical odor coming from a stand of trees near the east end of the private beach. 

Investigators determined multiple trees had been deliberately poisoned, though they have not identified the substance used.

A trail camera captured a brief flash of light near the area at about 2am, but investigators said they have not identified a suspect or determined a motive. Deputies are canvassing the neighborhood for additional surveillance footage.

An accused drug trafficker and his glamorous wife have only just resumed speaking, months after they were both arrested in a major drug raid in January. 

Darren Tennent has indicated he is willing to plead guilty to trafficking ecstasy after he was allegedly busted with a plethora of drugs at his Melbourne home while his wife Natalie Cockburn was also present at the address.

Tennent, 42, and Ms Cockburn were arrested at their Mount Waverley unit on January 21 after Australian Border Force officers raided the property for an 'unrelated matter'.  

Ms Cockburn was charged with 29 offences alongside her husband, but last month was cleared of any wrongdoing and had all charges dropped.

However, fallout from the bust meant she was barred from contacting her husband, and she relocated to Queensland while charges against her were still pending.

Tennent appeared before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday for a summary jurisdiction application after being charged with trafficking ecstasy.

He was remanded in custody after ABF officers allegedly found multiple bags of orange ecstasy tablets weighing a total of 414 grams.
