Tensions are mounting in northern France following the brutal killing of a 17-year-old Turkish boy, identified as Hassène, who was fatally struck in the neck with an axe in a Lidl parking lot in the town of Nogent-sur-Oise on Tuesday.
The gruesome nature of the crime, captured in a widely circulated video showing his mother screaming in horror, has sparked fears of violent unrest.
Authorities say Hassène, a student at the local Marie-Curie high school, was attacked by three individuals, described as “youths,” in what is being treated as a premeditated act that has significantly escalated the wave of violence plaguing the local community of Creil.

Oise Hebdo reported on Wednesday that a crisis unit had been deployed at the headquarters of the Creil Sud Oise local government building in preparation for potential riots. A force of 50 officers, including anti-terror units, was deployed to maintain order, particularly after fights broke out at the local hospital where Hassène’s body was taken.
Police also patrolled neighborhoods throughout the night to prevent further violence.

The public prosecutor, Loïc Abrial, confirmed that while rumors of additional casualties were circulating immediately after the attack, they were unfounded. However, he acknowledged the extraordinary level of violence involved and the deeply unsettling impact it has had on the region.
“This murder is everyone’s business,” said Mokhtar Allouache, deputy for emergency situations. “We must all be aware that young people are in trouble, lose their bearings and do not hesitate to take the plunge into horror.”
The motive for the killing is still under investigation, with initial leads pointing to a conflict between rival youth gangs. Several of the suspected perpetrators are reportedly from the nearby town of Montataire.
It is unclear whether the killing was racially motivated.
Former city officials were quick to lament the community’s demise following the attack. “At no time did barbarism reign. It was still good to live in this city,” former councillor Benoît Lamy told local media.
Djamal Benkherouf, another former elected official, called the attack “a summit of horror, a wake-up call.”
Remix News has reported on other disturbing incidents within the community in recent years, including the brutal murder of 15-year-old Shaïna Hansye, who was stabbed, doused with gasoline, and burned alive by her Muslim boyfriend while pregnant with his baby.

Her killer was sentenced to 18 years in prison, a sentence heavily criticized by Shaïna’s family, who expressed their outrage at the prosecution for opting not to appeal its leniency.
In 2022, footage of a 16-year-old disabled boy from Creil being attacked by a group of migrant peers went viral on social media, prompting several politicians to intervene and call for action against the rising violence.
