Former Biden Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo floats 2028 presidential run

Former Rhode Island governor and Biden Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on Tuesday told David Axelrod that she will run for president in 2028 if she feels it is the best way to continue serving her country.

Raimondo, who was the first female governor of Rhode Island, is one of the first Democrats to float a presidential bid. The revelation comes amid a critical point for the Democratic Party, after it suffered major losses in last year's general election.

The former cabinet secretary was reportedly considered for former President Joe Biden's vice president in 2020, according to Politico, but the position went to then-Senator and later Vice President Kamala Harris instead.

“I care deeply about this country, I’ve dedicated 15 years to public service and if I think there’s a big way for me to serve again including running, I’ll do it,” Raimondo said during a University of Chicago Institute of Politics event. “But I also, if I thought somebody else would be better, or better able to win, I’d get behind that person in a minute.”

The Democrat also warned her party that it faces an uphill battle in winning back voters after it lost support of the working class, and cautioned that Republicans could continue to dominate on the national level for several elections.

"How will we overcome this impression that we’re elitist, we’re out of touch, we don’t have our sense on the culture?” Raimondo said. “There’s so much to do. I don’t know how many cycles it’s gonna take. There’s a reason there were a dozen years between Carter and Clinton. And I don’t know where we are in that cycle.”
