Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old American-Israeli soldier held hostage by Hamas for more than 19 months, was released Monday and reunited with his family at an Israeli medical facility as he was seen holding a sign thanking President Trump.

Originally from Tenafly, New Jersey, Alexander was taken during the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack while serving in the Israel Defense Forces’ Golani 51 battalion.

He was the last known living American in Hamas custody. The group continues to hold the remains of four deceased US citizens and approximately 58 hostages overall, about 23 of whom are believed to still be alive.

At the reunion, Alexander was visibly emotional and smiling as he hugged his mother, Yael, and younger brother, who he had not seen in 584 days. “Look how massive this kid is,” Alexander said while hugging him according to the New York Post.

During his transport to Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital, Alexander displayed a handwritten sign that read, “Thank you President Trump.”

His note also included a message to his IDF unit. Negotiations for his release were brokered over the weekend, with mediation efforts reportedly indicating to Hamas that releasing Alexander would be viewed as a goodwill gesture toward former President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to visit the region later this week.

“You are strong. You are safe. You are home,” Yael told her son during the reunion.
