On May 13th, the Parliament’s controversial Chairwoman (Leader of the House) Nataliya Kiselova returned the president’s proposal and refused to initiate a parliamentary vote on it due to its ‘unconstitutionality.’ In our country of paradoxes, where everything is upside down, Mrs. Kisselova is a university professor of constitutional law.
One of the biggest gangsters in the country (‘oligarch’ might be a more fashionable term), sanctioned by the global Magnitsky Act, Delyan Peevski, who is the de facto prime-minister, declared:
“It is clear that the referendum will not take place” and called the president “untenable.”
Also on May 13th, our prime minister, Rossen Zhelyazkov, and the governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), Dimitar Radev, signed a statement of their approval of Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone as of January 1st, 2026.
On May 15th, 171 MPs ‘initialed’ the statement to show their support.
Despite all this political theater aimed to demonstrate overwhelming political support for the eurozone, recent polls show that the majority of Bulgarians want a referendum on the subject.
The opposition party, Revival, has invited the public to an assembly for a discussion of the impending accession into the eurozone on May 16th at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia.
It remains to be seen if Bulgarians will refuse to be ignored by their government and will go out into the streets in significant enough numbers to force a referendum.
