Investigation Opened Into Tragic Incident Involving NFL Legend

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in California has opened an investigation into an incident that killed a longtime friend and business partner of NFL legend John Elway.

Jeff Sperbeck, 62, reportedly died after falling from a golf cart driven by Elway.

The incident happened on April 25th and Sperbeck passed away from his injuries on April 30th.

Elway has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the tragic incident.

In a statement, Elway said:

“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck. There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me. My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”

From the Coloradoan:

The sheriff’s office has not given a timeline for completing its investigation and has not issued any substantive updates since announcing the investigation on April 30. The investigation was ongoing as of May 1, according to Lt. Deirdre Vickers, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

Sperbeck fell from a golf cart driven by Elway as the men and others were leaving an afterparty for the Stagecoach Festival, according to the Palm Desert Sun, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The party was at the Madison Club, a high profile golf club in La Quinta, California. Sperbeck struck his head on the asphalt and Elway was seen calling 911 for his longtime friend and business partner, according to a report from KESQ-TV in Palm Springs.

Sperbeck died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday morning at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

There has been no public explanation of what specifically led to Sperbeck falling.

Fox News reports:

A spokesperson for Cal Fire told Fox News Digital it worked with the Riverside County Fire Department in responding to the incident at 6:50 p.m. Authorities said Sperbeck suffered “serious injuries” and was transported to a local hospital and initially listed in critical condition, where he died on Wednesday at the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

Fox News Digital reached out to The Madison Club and Elway for comment.

The Cal Fire spokesperson said that the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office wasn’t requested to respond to the incident “due to the call being medical in nature.”

In a statement, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said it would conduct an investigation into the death of Sperbeck “and will take appropriate action based on the outcome.”

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office didn’t respond to Fox News Digital when asked why the office didn’t hear about the incident until two days later.
