Two Minnesota state Democrat lawmakers were shot in what Gov. Tim Walz called “targeted shootings.”
State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded.
“I’ve been briefed this morning on an ongoing situation involving targeted shootings in Champlin and Brooklyn Park,” Walz said.
“The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are on the scene. We will share more information soon,” he added.

Per CBS News:
Hortman and her husband were shot in Brooklyn Park, while Hoffman and his wife were shot in Champlin.
ADVERTISEMENTAt a Saturday morning press conference, Walz called the deaths of Hortman and her husband “a political assassination.”
Hortman represented Minnesota House District 34B, and Hoffman Minnesota Senate District 34. Both were members of the Democratic Party.
“Hortman was someone who served the people of Minnesota with grace, compassion, humor, and a sense of service,” Walz said. “She was a formidable public servant. A fixture and a giant in Minnesota.”
Walz said Hoffman and his wife were each shot multiple times.
“We are cautiously optimistic they will survive this assassination attempt,” Walz said.
“Manhunt is underway after Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and Rep. Melissa Hortman were shot overnight. Both lawmakers and their spouses have reportedly been shot. A shelter-in-place alert was sent out at 5:30 am for a three-mile radius around the Edinburgh Golf Course in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota,” Collin Rugg wrote.
“According to police, the incidents are targeted. The suspect is believed to be a white man with ‘brown hair wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants.’ (FOX9) Police say he is impersonating law enforcement,” he added.

ABC News reports:
The two shooting locations are a few miles away from each other in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, just north of Minneapolis.
Hoffman and his wife were shot around 2 a.m. in Champlin, Superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Drew Evans said.
ADVERTISEMENTAfter Hoffman was shot, officers were heading to pro-actively check on Hortman when they encountered the suspect at Hortman’s home around 3:35 a.m., Evans said.
The officers found a person who was dressed as a police officer — wearing a vest and a badge, and with a Taser and other equipment — at the door, coming out of Hortman’s house, police said.
The suspect fired at the officers; gunfire was exchanged and the suspect was able to escape and flee on foot, authorities said.
The suspect’s vehicle — which looked like a police vehicle, including police lights — was in Hortman’s driveway, authorities said.
