BREAKING: Karmelo Anthony INDICTED For Murder of Austin Metcalf — Faces Possible LIFE in Prison

Karmelo Anthony — the (alleged) teenage killer who fatally stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a Texas track meet — has just been indicted by a grand jury.

Though he was 17 at the time of the stabbing, Anthony is now 18 years old and is being tried as an adult.

He has been charged with first-degree murder, which carries a sentence of up to life in prison.

Collin County DA Greg Willis announced the indictment:

Despite Texas law considering 17-year-olds adults in the eyes of the law, a judge had previously ordered Anthony’s bond lowered and put him on house arrest.

CBS News reported:

Anthony, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was arrested on April 2 in connection with the stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a track meet at Kuykendall Stadium.

The teen, who is facing a first-degree murder charge, has been on house arrest since being released on a reduced bond on April 14. If convicted, Anthony could face a possible sentence of 5-99 years or life in prison. In the Texas criminal justice system, 17-year-olds are considered adults.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced that his team worked to present evidence to the grand jury for weeks.

“We know this case has struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond. That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core,” Willis said in a statement. “But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle. That’s what we’re committed to. And that’s exactly what this case deserves.”

Willis acknowledged Austin Metcalf’s family following the formal indictment, asking the community to “keep them in your thoughts — and if you’re willing, in your prayers as well.”

After being arrested by police, Karmelo Anthony admitted to stabbing Metcalf, but he still maintains that he acted in self-defense (which, even if true, bears the question: why did he have a knife with him at a school track meet in the first place?)

The Dallas Morning News shared his account of what happened:

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Anthony was waiting out a weather delay under a tent designated for Frisco Memorial High School students — where Metcalf attended school — when Metcalf told him to move.

Anthony, who was a student at Frisco Centennial High School, allegedly reached inside his bag and said “Touch me and see what happens,” the affidavit said. Metcalf then touched him, to which Anthony replied, “Punch me and see what happens.”

According to the report, Metcalf grabbed Anthony and again told him to move when Anthony pulled out a knife, stabbed Metcalf once in the chest and ran.

Anthony later told responding officers at the scene “He put his hands on me, I told him not to,” according to the affidavit.

The affidavit said Anthony also asked if Metcalf was going to be OK. Metcalf was pronounced dead at a hospital less than an hour after the stabbing.

However, allegedly, surveillance footage of the incident counters Karmelo’s version of the story.

By the way, footage of the incident does exist, but the school district has so far refused to release to the public, only allowing certain media outlets to view it.

For instance, The Daily Mail had this to say about the footage:

The video, recorded on a fixed camera at David Kuykendall Stadium, did not show any fighting, pushing or physical altercation between the boys prior to the knifing.

Instead, the clip viewed by Daily Mail at school district headquarters, showed several people sitting under the Memorial High School team tent.

Without any kind of apparent escalation, people can be seen running and walking away from the tent.

Later, what appears to be Metcalf’s body is moved out of the stadium bleachers to a walkway near the bottom of the seating area.

The surveillance appears to challenge the self-defense claim made by the murder suspect, offering little visible evidence that Anthony was in immediate danger before the attack.

The Frisco Police Department would not comment on whether it is the only video of the slaying.

What do you think?

Should Karmelo Anthony be sentenced to life in prison for the stabbing of Austin Metcalf?
