President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday discussed the conflict between Iran and Israel over the phone Saturday. According to Trump, they both agree the war should end.
“He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end,” Trump wrote.
Trump said on his Truth Social platform that the call lasted approximately an hour. He said, while they discussed Russia and Ukraine, much of the discussion concerned the war in Israel and Iran.
Putin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said Putin briefed Trump, according to the Associated Press, on Putin’s discussions with leaders of Israel and Iran. Ushakov told reporters that Putin condemned the military operation against Iran and expressed concerns about the conflict escalating. The situation could, Ushakov said, have “unpredictable consequences for the entire situation in the Middle East.”
Putin also discussed Russia’s willingness to provide mediation efforts and pointed out the steps Russia had taken to find “mutually acceptable agreements” during U.S.-Iran negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump said in his Truth Social post that Putin had called to wish him a happy birthday.
