A Somali migrant has been sentenced to eight months in jail for sexually assaulting a woman in broad daylight in June 2024. Abdiweli Ali, 24, ejaculated on a woman while traveling on the Luas Busaras train in Ireland. Dublin District Court heard the incident happened while the victim was heading to a concert.

Ali, a security guard who arrived in Ireland after claiming "asylum" in 2020, stood behind the victim, in her late twenties, on a jam-packed train for the eight-minute trip.

"At one point during the journey, the injured party felt something wet on the back of her leg but didn't have enough room to check what it actually was while on the Luas," Detective Maguire told the Court, according to RTE. "On arrival at The Point Luas stop with her friend, she checked her skirt and found what she suspected to be semen on her skirt."

Ali ran off the train and was arrested by police several days later. He was captured on surveillance video at the train station. The Court was presented with evidence of a DNA sample from Ali that matched the semen on the skirt.

The victim said in an impact statement, "My life has changed completely since that day. I feel disgusted and utterly violated." She recalled how she was travelling to a Smashing Pumpkins concert with her friend when she was assaulted. "We were not talking to men or wearing anything provocative. I was just going on the Luas with my friend, as I have on many different occasions," she said, according to the Irish Examiner.

"I thought I had no reason to doubt my safety as I was in a public space on a busy Luas in broad daylight. Now, I can't make any plans without having to consider the safety of every part of the plan," she told the Court. "Any sense of safety I had has been taken away," she said, explaining that she had to undergo counseling sessions.

The Court heard how Ali arrived in Ireland five years ago after allegedly fleeing from "various terrorist gangs trying to recruit young people into their organizations." Ali did not directly address the Court, but his defense counsel claimed he felt shame. He initally pleaded not guilty for changing his plea. As a result, Judge Malone suspended the final two months of his sentence on the condition Ali does not reoffend for two years.
