“You want to talk about the anti-Catholic joke? Well that would be the former president of the United States Joe Biden."
“Over the weekend there was this ridiculous kind of fake controversy over President Trump posting an image, I thought it was hilarious, of himself as the Pope,” Posobiec said. “So the conclave is going to be starting Wednesday in St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chape ... the selection of the next pope is imminent.”
Posobiec noted that Trump’s meme coincided with preparations for the papal conclave following the death of Pope Francis. He said that although there were some joking questions about Trump’s eligibility to become pope, “it only states that you just have to be baptized as Catholic, you do not have to actually be a priest, something not everyone knows.” He added, “So I’ve said, perhaps, Stephen Bannon, why not? Perhaps, but President Trump also pointed out that all he would have to do is find a Catholic priest to baptize him and he would be good to go.”
Trump had been asked about the meme during a press briefing at the White House, where he laughed it off. Posobiec called the media response overblown.
“So, look, it’s obviously a joke,” he said. “They ask him about, this reporter who asks him about it in the Oval Office while he’s giving a press briefing earlier today, and he said no, what’s the matter, you can’t take a joke? It’s ridiculous the things that people try to come up with.”
Posobiec then turned the focus to President Joe Biden, criticizing the media and political establishment for ignoring what he described as actual anti-Catholic behavior.
“You want to talk about the anti-Catholic joke? Well that would be the former president of the United States Joe Biden, being the ‘first’ or ‘second’ Catholic president and sitting there sending his FBI after the traditional Latin Mass goers or going after people who were praying the rosary a little bit too hard,” Posobiec said.
He continued, “Or going after people who were praying outside of a pro-life manner outside of an abortion clinic—these death carousels where they kill babies every single day and you have people praying out there, religious women saying they want it to stop, and he had his FBI and his DOJ round them up.”
“But no, Joe Biden is a good Catholic,” Posobiec added sarcastically. “Who cares about all the Catholics he rounded up and the ones he went after when he was infiltrating their masses and putting FBI agents under cover while he was checking to see who was praying the rosary a little too much… That’s what he had going on under Joe Biden as our ‘Catholic’ president.”
“That was the joke. Okay, that was the joke, that was offensive, and Kamala Harris and so many others [were] making horrific remarks about Catholics time and time again,” he concluded.
The meme sparked conversation online just days after Trump attended the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome. When asked Tuesday who he preferred as the next pope, Trump responded jokingly, “I’d like to be pope. That would be my number one choice.” He added that he had no strong preference, but praised Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York as “very good.”
