Organizers of the Cannes Film Festival updated their red carpet rules just one day before the event’s official opening, introducing a new restriction that bans nudity at all festival venues, including the red carpet.

According to the festival’s official website, “nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival," per to the Daily Mail. The statement says the change was made “for decency reasons,” a move that directly targets the growing trend of the "naked" dresses, known for their sheer fabrics and revealing designs.

That trend has dominated celebrity fashion in recent years, with celebs apparently willing to show nip.

The updated policy could significantly alter the appearance of this year’s red carpet, as the trend has been growing over recent years.

Last year’s Cannes event featured global sensation model Bella Hadid in a sheer halter-neck Saint Laurent gown, photographer Nadia Lee Cohen in a transparent Saint Laurent knit dress, and actress Vicky Krieps in a see-through Armani Privé look, reports CNN.

While the new dress code does not clearly define nudity, these previous outfits might no longer be acceptable under the revised rules.

The ambiguity has sparked questions among stylists and attendees, including producer CNN Style's Leah Dolan, who wrote “What is their definition of nudity? Would a printed image of a birthday suit, such as those found on Jean-Paul Gaultier’s dresses from the 1990s, breach the new dress code? Or does nakedness only resonate in 3D? Is nudity regarded holistically, or does a flashed nipple — a la Florence Pugh in hot pink Valentino — risk entry refusal to the Croisette?”

The nudity clause is one of two new restrictions added this year. A second rule bans “voluminous” outfits with large trains.
