A man who fell over 20 feet at PNC Park during Wednesday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs is in critical condition.

“The incident happened after Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI double in the seventh inning. According to CBS News, medical staff quickly came to his aid and placed him on a backboard before carting him off,” Collin Rugg wrote.

“Players were seen praying as medical staff tended to him. The game was delayed for about 10 minutes,” he added.

From the Associated Press:

Right after Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to put the Pirates ahead 4-3, players began waving frantically for medical personnel and pointing to the man, who had fallen onto the warning track.

The fan was tended to for approximately five minutes by members of both the Pirates and Cubs training staffs as well as PNC personnel before being removed from the field on a cart.

The team issued a statement shortly after the game ended saying the man was transported to the trauma center at Allegheny General Hospital.

Pittsburgh Public Safety, which includes Pittsburgh Police and EMS, posted on X Thursday that the “incident is being treated as accidental in nature.”

Pirates manager Derek Shelton and Cubs manager Craig Counsell both alerted the umpire crew of the situation immediately after the play.

“Even though it’s 350 feet away or whatever it is, I mean the fact of how it went down and then laying motionless while the play is going on, I mean Craig saw it, I saw it. We both got out there,” Shelton said. “I think the umpires saw it because of the way it kicked. It’s extremely unfortunate. That’s an understatement.”

Per NBC News:

The clutch hit brought many of the 11,297 paid fans to their feet, including the spectator seated in the first row above the Roberto Clemente Wall.

A person who witnessed the incident stated that it occurred quickly and that the man fell from the 21-foot wall.

“It was quick. I couldn’t tell if he jumped or fell,” Sam Miller said. EMS staff members strapped the man to a stretcher to immobilize him, Miller said.

McCutchen was among the players who reacted on the field as emergency medical responders tended to the man. Fans reported on social media that the stadium was silent.

“Truly hate what happened tonight. Cant help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him,” McCutchen wrote on X late Wednesday.

“Let us think about his loved ones and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls thru. May God Bless you all.”

Pirates manager Derek Shelton after the game asked that people keep the man in their prayers.

“Before we start, I just want to offer thoughts and prayers with the incident that happened earlier in the game,” he said at a post-game press conference, video from NBC affiliate WPXI of Pittsburgh showed.

Shelton also thanked EMS workers and medical staff from both teams who responded.
